Traveon Beck signs with Cal, faxes in letter of intent

The St. John Bosco product will look to make an immediate impact at a position of need for the Golden Bears.

Traveon Beck, the Bellflower St. John Bosco cornerback has completed his dream of becoming a Golden Bear football player by faxing in his letter of intent.

Beck is listed at 5'10 and 171 pounds according to ESPN and is talented enough to compete for immediate playing time in the defensive backfield of the Bears.

Cal had to fight off competition from Arizona State, UCLA, Washington State and Wisconsin to secure the services of Beck and it is easy to see why those programs were interested when you watch the tape.

Here is where he ranks with each of the major recruiting services.

ESPN: Three stars, 79th ranked cornerback, 106th ranked player in California.

Scout: Three stars, 37th ranked cornerback.

Rivals: Three stars, 71st ranked player in California.

247sports: Three stars, 85th ranked cornerback, 82nd ranked player in California.

Beck's ability on tape would suggest that he is a better player than the rankings indicate, but at the end of the day the rankings really don't matter anymore. It is about what you do at the NCAA level.

On tape Beck repeatedly shows off the ability to read the quarterback's eyes and bait him into throws. Beck is always watching the ball in the air which is a necessity to succeed as a defensive back at the highest levels of football.

Here is an in-depth scouting report of Beck.
