There has been a lot of noise about the departing class for the Bears this year and for good reason. The former bears are looking to make a big impression in the NFL this upcoming season with Jared Goff leading the way. All eyes will be on Goff Saturday where he will showcase his accuracy and arm strength in front of a bevy of NFL scouts. Trevor Davis, Stephen Anderson and Kenny Lawler will have their eyes on the forty yard dash amongst other measurements.
Jared is the best pro prospect out of any former Cal players in the combine this year. The most recent mock draft from ESPN's Mel Kiper has him going to the Cowboys, which as a 49ers fan gives me nightmares given they have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Add in Dez Bryant as a primary receiving option and that could be a fearsome duo for years to come.
A lot has been made of Jared Goff's hand size in recent days and Goff sat down with Cam Inman to quell any concerns teams may have about his ability to "manipulate the football".
Jared regarding being told he has small hands-
- "I've been told I have pretty big hands my whole life. I heard I have small hands yesterday, apparently."
- "Absolutely...Yeah, I'll be happy to go anywhere."
- "I learned you're going to have to start from the ground up, and honestly it starts with hard work, hard work in the offseason and no shortcuts really. We were 1-11 (in 2013). We were terrible. We lost every single game besides the game against Portland State. We had to really start from the floor and build everything up, and we were able to go 8-5 and win a bowl game. It was tremendous. It's a testament to our hard work."
Kenny Lawler, in my opinion, is the most underrated prospect from Cal headed to the combine. He has some of the best hands I have ever seen in college and the biggest question mark is his ability to get separation at the next level. A lot of people had question marks around Alshon Jeffrey and thought he would be too slow to succeed in the NFL, yet he has been an absolute stud. I don't expect big things in the 40 from Lawler, but if he surprises and runs in the 4.4/4.5 range he could soar up the draft charts.
Stephen Anderson looks like an athletic tight end or possession wide receiver at the next level. He has amazing hands and can contribute blocking downfield. It will be interesting to see where people have him after his day is complete Saturday.
Last, but certainly not least, Trevor Davis who has the ability to be a productive player at the next level. Todd McShay had some incredibly positive feedback for the Bears wide receiver and he certainly has the physical ability to excel. Evidence below:
Studying tape on Cal QB Jared Goff right now and this WR No. 9 (Trevor Davis) keeps flashing. Quick to separate and quick after catch.
