Women's Water Polo
DAVIS - The No. 3 Cal women's water polo team continued to flash its trademark defense in notching two more victories Saturday at the Davis Invitational.
The Bears (13-1) held No. 12 Pacific scoreless in the first half and held off the Tigers for an 8-5 victory then came back to defeat Brown 11-3. Cal has now won nine games in a row.
Junior Stephanie Mutafyan led the offense with four goals in the two games while fellow junior Genevieve Weed and sophomore Carla Carrega added three. Carrega now has a team-high 31 goals this season.
BERKELEY - Competing in front of a national TV audience as well as seven different national championship teams who were back at Witter Rugby Field for their five-year through 35-year reunions, California beat Air Force, 65-12, following the Golden Bears' 35-12 win over Cal Maritime on Saturday.
Eight Bears scored a total of 10 tries against the Falcons, with fullback Evan Coleman and scrumhalf Nicklas Boyer contributing two apiece. Boyer finished with 25 points total against Air Force, adding six conversions (6-for-10) and a penalty kick (1-of-1) to the Cal scoreline.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Early offense gave the Cal softball team a lead to work with and three pitchers made it stand up as the Bears grabbed a 6-3 win over San Diego to finish the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State.
"We were struggling at the plate the last couple days," Cal head coach Diane Ninemire said. "I think we relaxed and it came down to pitch selection. Taking advantage of pitches that we could get some results from. Jackson leading the team off was a big factor. She had been struggling a little bit and I think her just getting the team going gave every hitter confidence and we were able to score some runs for Kourtney."
