The latest NFL mock drafts don't have Jared Goff as the first quarterback taken overall. After it seemed like the Cleveland Browns would be favorites to pick the Cal QB with the second pick, two NFL prognosticators weighed in to slightly move him down the board.
Mike Mayock of the NFL Network has Carson Wentz as his number one quarterback overall. Mayock was a big fan of Wentz's Senior Bowl performance, and currently has Wentz first and Goff second.
"From my perspective, I saw what I needed to see," NFL Media draft expert Mike Mayock said of Wentz. "Big arm, good location, got rid of the football."
Mel Kiper's latest mock draft has the Browns picking Wentz with the second pick, and then the Dallas Cowboys would take Goff with the fourth pick. Similarly to the Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre dynamic, Goff could be groomed as the heir apparent to Tony Romo off the bench.
"This is going to be a fascinating situation. On one hand, the Dallas front office isn't the least bit delusional if they look at the roster with a healthy Tony Romo and believe they can compete for a playoff spot, which makes it harder to take a QB who might not see the field for a couple of years. But ... let's not forget that they need to upgrade the backup QB situation, period. That's what derailed them last season when Romo was out. Tough call, especially if Goff is the top QB on their board and he's available here."
Obviously, a lot of things are fluid. The NFL Combine is coming up this week, and a lot of things can change based on how both Goff and Wentz perform there.
