Out of Westminster high school, three-star defensive end Cortez Alston has made his way to the top of Cal’s list, and vice-versa. More from 247Sports.
Sitting on 20 offers at this point, Alston spoke to Irish247 and stated that he has narrowed down his recruitment to a top five.
Notre Dame, Cal, Tennessee, Georgia Tech and USC all made the cut, as Alston announced on the latest Irish247 recruiting podcast.
Regarding a final decision, look for one to come after his senior season is complete.
As one of the current favorites to land the Georgia prospect, Cal would benefit from his large frame and pass-rushing abilities.
The main competition for his services appears to be Notre Dame at the moment, where he has taken an official visit. Cal already has two defensive end commits on the roster in Gabriel Cherry and Alex Funches, so the position isn’t an immediate need, but if Dykes’ time in the Pac-12 has shown us anything it is that depth in the trenches is a must to be able to compete. Cal has oftentimes been able to dip into southern talent, likely because of the Dykes legacy down there, and getting Alston would be a good get.
