Cal isn’t looking to just improve their defensive recruiting. They want to get better at many positions, including special teams. Punter isn’t exactly their biggest area of need, but Cal would like to stay stable at that position.

Ryan Stonehouse appears to be target number one on that front. The Mater Dei kicker rceived an official Cal offer earlier this week to be Cal’s potential punter of the future.

Stonehouse is currently ranked as the 7th best punter by Kohl’s Kicking Camps. Here is their official evaluation of his kicking.

Stonehouse has competed at multiple Kohl's events. His explosive hips and overall leg strength are special. His dad and uncle played at USC and Stanford so his understanding of the game is outstanding. Stonehouse is a consistent punter who will only get better in the years to come. He is a late bloomer who is the best punter on the West coast in the 2017 class. Stonehouse can KO but his punting is what separates him from others in the 2017 class.

He is not expected to dawdle around. Expect a decision sooner rather than later.

More from Ryan Gorcey on how Cal has recruited Stonehouse.

"This has been a long process with Cal, pretty much," said Stonehouse, who visited unofficially for Cal's 28-23 win over Utah on Oct. 1. "I've had Mark [Tommerdahl] contact me numerous times, in person, and I took an unofficial, watched a game, loved the area, loved the stadium, super excited about Cal. It was cool to get the offer, considering how much I've been through with Cal, compared to any other school."

It’s unlikely Cal will give a punter a full scholarship offer until they see what he’s capable of. It’s more likely to be of the preferred walk-on version. If Stonehouse commits and he proves to be more than capable in beating out a senior Dylan Klumph, he could be ready in a matter of months.

Klumph is a sophomore and was the second best net Pac-12 punter last year, so I’d guess if Stonehouse committed he’d have at least a redshirt year.

Here’s Stonehouse’s kicking highlights. What are your thoughts on him being the future Cal punter?
