Cal is 15 point underdogs to Washington State

Tough sledding.

NCAA Football: Washington at California Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

For the third straight week, the California Golden Bears are major underdogs. Cal sits at 15 point underdogs to the Washington State Cougars on their final road trip of the season. Cal ended up being around 17 to 20 point underdogs to USC and Washington the last two weeks, but could not cover the spread either week.

Washington State is currently undefeated in Pac-12 play. After another bizarre FCS loss to Eastern Washington and getting shut down by Boise State, Wazzu has romped through their conference schedule. They shut down Stanford. They ran all over Oregon. They then had three close calls against UCLA without Josh Rosen, Arizona State without a quarterback, and had to rally to beat Oregon State. They appeared to right the ship last week by destroying Arizona, so they’re coming into this game in top form. The Apple Cup is now guaranteed to determine who represents the North in the Pac-12 title game.

Cal has only covered the spread once on the road this year (San Diego State), and have been underdogs in every road game this year. Cal has been favored twice this year (Hawaii, Oregon State), have been involved in approximate pick’em lines where they’ve been slight favorites or slight underdogs (Oregon, Utah), and have been underdogs six times (Texas, USC, UW, WSU, ASU, SDSU).

Although it looks grim for Cal to get back to .500 this weekend, based on all the lines I’ve seen recently, I’d guess the final lines of the season would be:

  • Cal 3 to 4 point underdogs against Stanford in the Big Game
  • Cal 2 to 3 point favorites against UCLA

Cal fans, what are your thoughts on the line?
