Cal Football Recruiting: Friday Night Lights Week 10

The high school football regular season is winding down, but FNL is just heating up as Jay Godfrey and Jordan Genmark Heath stood out in this week’s edition.

Taariq Johnson & Jeremiah Hawkins: WR & ATH, Buena Park Coyotes (Buena Park, CA)

Buena Park stomped Sunny Hills 40-14 to improve to 8-1 this season. Cal commit Taariq Johnson caught three passes for 34 yards and one touchdown in this contest.

The Coyotes take on Troy in the final game of the regular season in a matchup that will determine the Freeway League regular season champion.

Chase Garbers: QB, Corona del Mar Sea Kings (Newport Beach, CA)

Corona del Mar beat Northwood 45-7 to improve to 8-1 this season. Garbers played brilliantly once again as he completed 20 of 26 passes for 264 yards and four touchdowns.

Here’s an excerpt from the Los Angeles Times’ story on yet another Sea Kings victory:

CdM notched its 24th straight league win Friday night and eighth straight win overall. This one was textbook, as the Sea Kings scored touchdowns on each of their six drives in the first half. Leading the way again was Cal-bound senior quarterback Chase Garbers, who completed 20 of 26 passes for 264 yards and four touchdowns.

Garbers now has 33 touchdown passes this season, tying his CdM single-season record he set as a junior.

"Chase is able to process so much information, do it so efficiently, but our wide receivers are doing a great job catching the ball," said O'Shea, who saw eight different receivers register receptions in the first half. "I don't know if we had a drop tonight. And we didn't run it a bunch, but we ran it well. It was a good balance all-around, and certainly Chase is the trigger-man that gets it all going for us."

The Sea Kings square off against Irvine in their regular season finale.

Pretty impressive when Garbers and the starters only played in one half of most games this season.

Michael Onyemaobi: ATH, Chaparral Pumas (Temecula, CA)

Lost 38-9 to Murrieta Mesa to fall to 1-8. Chaparral’s season will conclude with a showdown against Temecula Valley, who just happens to carry a 1-8 record as well.

Gabe Cherry: DE, Centennial Golden Hawks (Bakersfield, CA)

Lost 51-14 to Liberty to fall to 2-7 this season. Centennial will close out the season against Frontier, who are 2-7 also.

Here are some highlights from Cherry’s hudl page which feature plays from games up to the mid-way point of the season.

Je’Quari Godfrey: CB, Bishop O’Dowd Dragons (Oakland, CA)

Beat Berkeley 49-12 to improve to 8-1 this season. Godfrey registered one catch for 20 yards, two tackles, one fumble recovery, two pass breakups and one interception.

Sounds like Godfrey had a great game, right? Well, apparently it’s the plays you don’t make that stick out in your mind.

Biaggio Ali-Walsh: RB, Bishop Gorman Gaels (Las Vegas, NV)

Bishop Gorman blasted Durango 56-0 to maintain their perfect record this season. Ali-Walsh carried the ball 13 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

The Gaels have now won 81 consecutive games against in-state opponents. They will look to extend that streak when they take on undefeated Sierra Vista in the regular season finale.

Here is a feature story on Ali Walsh from Sports Stars of Tomorrow:

Tyriq Hardimon: DB, Lassiter Trojans (Marietta, GA)

The Trojans lost 31-28 to Cherokee as they fall to 6-3 on the year. Lassiter led the game 21-0 after one quarter, but they could not prevent the comeback.

Below is a highlight video of Hardimon’s senior season so far.

Marquese Taylor: ATH, Lovejoy Wildcats (Lovejoy, GA)

The Wildcats beat Jonesboro 14-0 to end the regular season 6-1 in conference, and 6-4 overall.

Jordan Genmark-Heath: ATH, Cathedral Catholic Dons (San Diego, CA)

The Dons beat St. Augustine 35-0 to improve to 9-0 this season.

Genmark-Heath rushed four times for 45 yards and one touchdown. He also caught two passes for 11 yards. On the defensive side of the ball he made three tackles, one pass breakup, and one interception. Genmark Heath also returned a punt for a touchdown.

Here is a post-game interview from San Diego Preps with Genmark Heath.

Michael Saffell: OL, Edison Chargers (Huntington Beach, CA)

The Chargers beat Fountain Valley 56-12 to improve to 8-1 this season. They end the regular season against Huntington Beach.

Paul Scott: LB, McClymonds Warriors (Oakland, CA)

The Warriors defeated Castlemont 58-24 to improve to 7-1 this season.

Alex Funches & Da’Quan Patton: DE & LB, Trinity Valley C.C. (Athens, TX)

Trinity Valley ended the regular season with a comprehensive 72-28 victory against Cisco College to improve to 8-1.

The Cardinals head into the playoffs as the top seeded team in its conference and will take on Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. NEO is the only team to beat TVCC this season.

Here are highlights mid-season highlights of Funches’ season thus far.
