Cal football news: Chris Borrayo wants to “beat the crap out of USC”, Chad Hansen update

That and more USC news.

NCAA Football: California at Stanford Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Cal offensive guard Chris Borrayo didn’t mince words earlier this week. He has no love lost for the Trojans.

“I want to beat the crap out of USC,” Borrayo said. “I don’t remember the score, but I remember the whipping we got my freshman year. Ever since then, the goal was to make sure we beat the crap out of them or die trying.

“It was a pretty nasty game my freshman year, and I don’t know if you guys understand this about USC: Class is not in their name. It’s something important to me and something very important to our team to know we’re going out there trying to win.”

On the Cal injury front, the major one concerns Chad Hansen. Sonny Dykes seems hopeful that Hansen will play.

Dykes said he’s gone from “hopeful” to “optimistic” that leading receiver Chad Hansen will play against USC.

...

“When arguably your best player is out, then you’ve got to figure out some other guys to step up,” Dykes said. “A bunch of guys did some good things for us. I think it gives our players confidence that: ‘Hey, we’ve got guys who can make plays.’”

Some quick notes from the Cal football Tuesday pressers.

Coach Sonny Dykes

  • “Odd Tuesday, given that we leave tomorrow [for USC].”
  • On academic logistics of weekday games: Different from rest of the conference. Lots of players have midterms, and players had to make Friday presentations the day of the Oregon game.
  • On overall schedule: Had to practice on Monday, didn't practice on Saturday, met up Sunday morning to go over Oregon, afternoon practice to help install USC.
  • Darius Allensworth’s status is up in the air with a hamstring injury.
  • Vic Enwere had a screw put in his foot in his surgery.

Quarterback Davis Webb

  • On Oregon and USC defense: Ducks kept them in front defensively, forcing a lot of underneath. Trojans will do the same.
  • On Hansen: When you lose someone like Chad, there will be struggles. Credits Vic Wharton, Brandon Singleton, Melquise Stovall.
  • On Jake Spavital: Credits him for run-pass balance.

Offensive lineman Aaron Cochran

  • On offensive line coach Brandon Jones: He draws up 60 to 90 plays they walk through everyday.
  • On Webb: Credits him for making run and pass adjustments
  • On USC: Speed is important with USC being thin.

Defensive back Cameron Walker

  • On USC: I just remember having it, and letting it slip away.
  • On short week: Big challenge is recovery.

There are some USC injuries and updates also to watch out for.

Running back Justin Davis is likely not going to play for the Trojans with a sprained ankle. Don’t expect that to stop the USC run attack at all—USC erupted for over 300 yards against Arizona without Davis the week before.

Wide reciever JuJu Smith-Schuster is expected to play.

Linebacker Jabari Ruffin was suspended, joining Osa Masina and Don Hill as the third Trojan linebacker to be suspended.
