Cal Football Recruiting: Friday Night Lights Week Seven

Chase Garbers and Biaggio Ali Walsh put up insane performances while Cal’s newest commit, Michael Saffell, makes his first appearance since commiting to Cal.

NCAA Football: California at Oregon State Cole Elsasser-USA TODAY Sports

Taariq Johnson & Jeremiah Hawkins: WR & ATH, Buena Park Coyotes (Buena Park, CA)

Johnson caught 1 pass for 14 yards in Buena Park’s glorified team walk through which masqueraded as a game against Sonora. The Coyotes won 55-0 and are now 5-1 this season. Hawkins missed out for a second consecutive week due to injury.

Chase Garbers: QB, Corona del Mar Sea Kings (Newport Beach, CA)

Garbers dominated the competition by completing 25 of 32 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-7 rout of Woodbridge to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Sea Kings have now won 5 consecutive games since their season opening loss, which, according to an article from the Orange County Register, their head coach believes was a good lesson for his team to learn early in the season. Garbers elaborated in this excerpt from the story:

"We've improved a lot," Garbers said. "That loss was definitely a wake-up call for us. It proves that we're not that good. We can get beat really easily. ... Us seniors definitely took that into consideration. The whole team did. We have to work our tails off and keep executing to perfection."

Michael Onyemaobi: ATH, Chaparral Pumas (Temecula, CA)

Lost to Great Oak 36-0 to fall to 1-5.

Gabe Cherry: DE, Centennial Golden Hawks (Bakersfield, CA)

Beat Stockdale 34-29 to improve to 2-4. Cherry and the Golden Hawks picked up a much-needed victory and in the video below Cherry makes a nice stop in the backfield on a run play.

Je’Quari Godfrey: CB, Bishop O’Dowd Dragons (Oakland, CA)

Godfrey and the Dragons beat Piedmont 37-19 to improve to 5-1 this season. Godfrey tallied a tackle and an interception in this contest. The interception was deep downfield on an under-thrown pass by the opposition QB, but Godfrey did well to beat the receiver in the air and hold on the ball after landing hard on the ground.

Biaggio Ali-Walsh: RB, Bishop Gorman Gaels (Las Vegas, NV)

The Bishop Gorman juggernaut keeps on rolling as they beat Spring Valley 69-13 to improve to 7-0 this season. Walsh had a great game as he rushed for 173 yards and one touchdown on just 11 carries. He also caught one pass for 13 yards. It says everything about Bishop Gorman that its being viewed as slightly disappointing that Spring Valley was within eight points (14-6) briefly during the first half before Bishop Gorman scored the final 55 points of the game.

Tyriq Hardimon: DB, Lassiter Trojans (Marietta, GA)

Hardimon and the Trojan Lost 45-14 to Roswell to fall to 5-1 this season.

Marquese Taylor: ATH, Lovejoy Wildcats (Lovejoy, GA)

The Wildcats were on a bye this week.

Jordan Genmark-Heath: ATH, Cathedral Catholic Dons (San Diego, CA)

Michael Saffell: OL, Edison Chargers (Huntington Beach, CA)

Saffell, Cal’s newest commit, and the Chargers beat Newport Harbor 48-7 to improve to 5-1. Here is what Scout recruiting analyst Greg Biggins had to say about the offensive lineman.

Alex Funches & Da’Quan Patton: DE & LB, Trinity Valley C.C. (Athens, TX)

Funches and Patton were on a bye this week.
