Cal Women's Basketball vs. Arizona Open Thread

Can #21 Cal get to 1-1 in conference play or will Arizona "Bear Down" on the young Bears? Discuss here!

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Well, the Pac-12 opener on Saturday was not what we were hoping, but it's a new day as the now #21 California Golden Bears women's basketball team heads to Tucson looking to rebound with a win against the Wildcats.

NEWS AND NOTES

  • After the loss to Arizona State, Cal fell to #21 in the rankings. Arizona State moved up to #14. Stanfurd is at #9, Oregon State is at #11 and UCLA is #15.
  • Another week, another Freshmen of the Week honor for Kristine Anigwe! It's hard not to go "Well, what else is new?" every time this happens but wow, this is spectacular.

ARIZONA PREVIEW

Game start time: 7:00 PM PST (8 local time)

Location: McKale Memorial Center, Tucson, AZ

TV: Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Arizona (with Cal alum Kate Scott with the play-by-play!)

Cal has beaten Arizona 17 straight times, and the Wildcats have generally been near the bottom of the conference. However, the Wildcats currently stand at 9-4 and despite a tough loss to Stanfurd, this will not be an easy one. The Wildcats have been one of the best teams in the Pac-12 at three point shooting, at 38.7%. That is a stat Cal will need to lower. They've also been playing well defensively, holding opponents to 55.6 points per game.

They are led by LaBrittney Jones, who averages 11 points a game and had 11 points against Furd.

As for the Bears, their youth clearly showed itself against a tough veteran Arizona State team on the road. It seemed like the team was searching for answers the whole time... On the other hand, as I'm typing this article the Sun Devils are absolutely taking it to Stanfurd as well. Is that a sign of encouragement? We shall see. It was encouraging to see Anigwe still have a good game (in her hometown) and that was a factor in her keeping the Pac-12 Freshmen honor. I expect her to be poise again in helping the Bears get to 1-1 in conference play.

Wish I could give you more, but this was a last minute assignment for me and I have a "watch party" to go to (seriously). Go Bears!
