Cal football recruiting: Bears offer Michigan decommit Victor Viramontes

After losing Armani Rogers in its 2016 class, Cal is looking for someone to join Max Gilliam as a quarterback. It appears as if its next choice is recent Michigan decommit Victor Viramontes.

Viramontes, the number 427 overall recruit and 24 overall athlete, according to 247Sports, recently added a Cal offer just hours after announcing his decommitment from Michigan. It is no secret that Sonny Dykes is going after a second quarterback in this class, especially after he extended an offer to Mississippi quarterback Jack Abraham, and it seems like Viramontes is very high on their radar.

Viramontes additionally plays on the defensive side of the football, and it is possible that Dykes might want to use him to bolster their linebacker depth. At 6-2, 220 lbs with a 4.6 40-yard dash, Viramontes could provide an athletic presence in the middle of the field, which has been missing from the defense in recent years. With his size, you have to figure he could also transition to safety if needed (continuing the trend of the Dykes era). However, it is important to note he has primarily been recruited as a quarterback.

With Max Gilliam entering Cal early, the timing of Viramontes' recruitment is weird, as he would find himself disadvantaged if he wanted to compete for early playing time. Either way, adding a talented athlete like Viramontes could help out Cal in a number of ways.
