Good news! The California Golden Bears have landed the commitments of two four star safeties so far this class in Shurod Thompson and Marquel Dismuke.
Bad news! Both of them have ended up reopening their recruitment. Thompson appears to be looking at programs like Oklahoma and Oregon State, while Dismuke was taken by Mike Riley and Nebraska (how does Mike Riley still keep on beating us? I thought he left this conference!).
Third time's the charm right? Bellflower (Ca.) St. John Bosco four star safety D.J. Morgan officially received a Cal offer this week. Morgan is a top fifty safety prospect and top fifty in the state of California.
Morgan reopened his recruitment recently after committing early to Arizona State, and Cal was one of the first schools circulated as a potential new place for him. Morgan had his first official visit to Notre Dame in early September. But it sounds like Cal will get a trip sometime this year and will be very much in the mix.
Even better news: Greg Biggins of Scout thinks Cal is in the lead.
He recently set up an official visit to Notre Dame for (Sept. 4) and the Irish are a real player here but we’re hearing California could be the team to beat right now.
The Bears were the runner up choice for Morgan when he originally committed, he has been on campus multiple times already and plans to take in a few games this coming season.
Cal currently has a bunch of commitments from defensive backs, but the majority of them are slated to be cornerbacks (Traveon Beck, Camryn Bynum, Josh Drayden are all primarily corners). Cal needs solid safety prospects long-term to field a good Pac-12 level defense again, and currently the Bears are scrambling on that front. Morgan could be another piece in help solving this long-term problem.
