Cal football recruiting: Treyjohn Butler to decide August 14

Can the Bears secure a commitment from a consensus four-star cornerback?

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Etiwanda (Ca.) cornerback Treyjohn Butler has set a commitment date for August 14. He has a top four of California, Stanford, Northwestern and Arizona State. Can the Bears strike an early blow in the battle for the Axe by defeating their archrivals?

According to 247Sports, Stanford is the likely destination for Butler. While the experts believe Butler is destined to play on the wrong side of The Big Game rivalry, Butler had a great time on his official visit with the Bears, which Rivals recruiting analyst Adam Gorney referred to as "game-changing."

Securing a commitment from Butler would be huge for the Bears, who have three cornerback commits in the 2016 class from Bellflower (Ca.) St. John Bosco's Traveon Beck, Corona (Ca.) Centennial's Camryn Bynum and Dallas (Tx.) Bishop Dunne's Josh Drayden.

Butler is ranked higher than our current cornerback commitments and would be a huge get for the Bears. Cal has 10 cornerbacks listed on its current roster, including two seniors (Joel Willis and Darius White). Given the state of the Cal secondary, depth chart spots should not be guaranteed for anyone unless one of our DB's steps up and has a great 2015 season, which means early playing time is a distinct possibility for talented incoming cornerbacks next season.

Hopefully Butler commits to the Bears, and sticks with his commitment (Shurod Thompson and Marquel Dismuke ... sigh). I'm not discounting Northwestern and Arizona State, but the buzz around Butler indicates this should be a Bay Area battle between the Bears and Cardinal.

Go Bears! Beat Furd!
