In Men's Swimming, Golden Bears captured six medals for Team USA - four of them gold - after the weeklong competition at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea, that concluded Friday.
Meanwhile, Women's Swimming Golden Bears brought home 9 medals from the World University Games.
Before the football season starts, we looked at how the California Golden Bears are doing at each and every position heading into this fall. With a squad returning 17 of its 22 starters, this Golden Bear team looks capable of finally making a run at the Pac-12 Championship — or at least a Pac-12 North title.
The Golden Bears finished a win away from bowl eligibility last season. They started off the year with an impressive record of 4-1 — thought that could have easily been a 5-0 start to the season if not for the an Anu Solomon last second Hail Mary pass in the Pac-12 opener.
Then, the Golden Bears hit a brick wall — the Washington Huskies defensive front. Against the likes of Shaq Thompson and Danny Shelton, the Bear Raid offense staggered, and it never truly recovered. After a close loss to UCLA, and a fairly lopsided game against Oregon, the Bears got their last win of the season against the Oregon State Beavers and the rest of the season is history.
Quarterback Jared Goff was impressive again in his second year under Head Coach Sonny Dykes, leading the Pac-12 in passing yards. Running back Daniel Lasco surprised many by eclipsing 1,000 yards on the season in a pass happy offensive system, and the Cal wideouts continued to mature and progress. The offensive line got better over the course of the season, and the offense overall, was one of the best in the country.
However, the Golden Bear's defense continued to struggle in Dykes' system. The defensive line struggled to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks, but was solid against the run. The linebackers were probably the most impressive group on the defensive end, helping the front four against the run, and doing a solid job against tight ends in pass coverage. The weakest link of the defensive group, was most certainly the secondary, who struggled to defend against the Pac-12's elite quarterbacks and wide receivers.
8. Jared Goff, California Golden Bears - Jared Goff made a huge leap in his sophomore season and should become a true household name this year. Goff completed 62.1 percent of his passes last season for 3,973 yards, which was good for fifth in the country. Goff throws a beautiful football and can pretty much take a game over by himself. Goff also makes great decisions, throwing just seven interceptions on more than 500 pass attempts. If Goff makes even more progress in his third year, I have no doubt he'll be a first round pick in next year's NFL draft.
