Golden Bear Spotlight: Student-Athletes Reflect At CommencementMajor League BaseballBy Herb Benenson, Cal Athletic Communications
BERKELEY – Last Saturday, more than 5,000 undergraduates received their degrees during Cal’s annual commencement at California Memorial Stadium. Among those in the crowd were student-athletes across the athletic department, each with a sense of accomplishment for his or her extraordinary efforts in the classroom and competition that culminated with this seminal moment.
“While today may feel like an end and feel like a celebration, it’s also a little bit of a beginning,” Director of Athletics Mike Williams said at a post-graduation student-athlete reception inside the University Club. “It a beginning of a time when you will be asked to help serve the community and you will be asked to add additional bricks to the foundation that so many have laid before you to get us to where we are today. We are very proud of you; we are very proud of your accomplishments. What all of us have in common right now is the fact that we are Cal alums.”
Shortstop Marcus Semien is riding a eight-game hitting streak for the Oakland Athletics. In that eight-game stretch, Semien is hitting .364 with a double, two triples, and a home run.
