The California Golden Bears picked up a huge national signing day surprise. Buena Park (Ca.) wide receiver and athlete Jaylinn Hawkins ended up picking Cal over Arizona State, with Boise State, Oregon, Utah and Washington also in consideration. This is a significant surprise, but a very pleasant one.
Hawkins provides the Bears with a very solid National Signing Day commitment and solidifies a very solid class of wide receivers and defensive backs (as Hawkins might be able to go either way at the position). Hawkins is classified by most services as a wide receiver and could go toe-to-toe with many of our great receiving commitments, but also has the potential to matchup as a defensive back and play that side of the football. It will be interesting to see where he starts his Cal career, because he is one of those players who has the potential to play on either side.
Here are the rankings from all the services.
- Rivals: 4 stars (5.8), 24th best wide receiver, 32nd best California recruit, 233rd best prospect
- Scout: 4 stars, 21st best wide receiver, 176th best prospect
- 247Sports: 3 stars (89), 42nd best wide receiver, 51st best California recruit
- ESPN: 3 stars (79), 45th best California recruit, 63rd best wide receiver
