There was a bit of speculation that California Golden Bears defensive end Brennan Scarlett (much like Avery Sebastian) might be considering transferring for his final season of eligibility. Those rumors appear to be unmerited.
"There’s been some rumors out there, some of its kind of accurate, some of it’s not," Dykes said. "We anticipate having him back."
Some of the issues related to Scarlett continuing his education. Scarlett’s major is business administration.
"I think we got through it," Dykes said.
Scarlett has struggled with injuries all through his time at Cal. He played sparingly in 2011, redshirted in 2013, and while he started most of the first five games, only logged five tackles and two sacks before surgery ended his season. His only relatively healthy season was 2012, when he logged 40 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
Scarlett, Barr, Wilson, Johnson, Westerfield...depth at DE? What is this I don't even..,— Scott Chong (@kodiakcgb) February 13, 2015
For the first time in a long time, Cal might end up with a lot of depth at the defensive end position. With Scarlett, Todd Barr, Kyle Kragen, Puka Lopa, Kennedy Emesibe, DeVante Wilson, Jonathan Johnson, Russell Ude, and Noah Westerfield all likely to be in the rotation next season, the Bears are likely to finally have depth at a crucial spot in their 4-3 scheme. That might be all we need to improve on pass defense next season.
