Lonny Powell has left the Cal football program

Tough.

Cal has lost a critical cog of the rebuilding plan. Sonny Dykes confirmed with Ryan Gorcey the departure of true freshman running back Lonny Powell from the program. The true freshman didn't see a snap at Cal this year, and you'd expect would move down the junior college route before transferring to another major program.

This is the second straight year Cal has lost one of their top offensive skill recruits. Erik Brown (one of the top ranked recruits from the 2014 recruiting class) departed the team before the season began, and now Powell is gone for 2015. Powell was slated to be huge impact weapon at tailback, but it looks like there was a mutual parting of ways.

Luckily for the Bears, Cal is deep enough at running back to avoid any depth chart issues. Tre Watson, Vic Enwere and Khalfani Muhammad will form one of the best trios in the conference going into next season. Perhaps Powell didn't want to wait his turn to see action in 2017, since he probably would have only seen minimal snaps at running back this season. Cal will probably target a second potential running back to pair with Derrick Clark in this class.
