Cal basketball falls out of top 25 to 28th in Coaches, 33rd in AP Poll

Rough week.

After surprisingly getting swept in Las Vegas by San Diego State and Richmond, Cal basketball will have to regain the trust of the college basketball world. The Bears lost their lofty 14th preseason ranking and dropped out of the top 25 altogether. The drop was more dramatic in the AP Poll than the Coaches.

Cal will not have a significant test for a few weeks until they play St. Mary's and Virginia, so don't expect a return to the top 25 in the near future. The Bears have a lot of proving to do before they're ready to show they're a top 25 team.

Interestingly, Virginia and Arizona also were upset recently, but did not drop that much and are still top 15 teams. Cal still has a lot of national cache they have to earn, and it was a disappointing effort in Vegas to not even get a split (a split which would probably have kept them in the top 25).

Here are the rankings.
