Golden Recruiting Wire: Cal football camp Begins

New, 13 comments

Even though camp started earlier this week, the Cal coaching staff is still hard on the recruiting trail trying to secure some pre-season commitments.

Ezra Shaw

Pro-style QB and recent commit Ross Bowers has said that he plans to enroll early at Cal and participate in Spring practice. Pretty standard move by Bowers. I think failing to do make this move in this day and age only serves to put a prospective starting QB behind the eight ball in terms of learning the play book and adapting to the speed of the game. Bowers will do well to watch and observe Goff during his first spring, who will have a masterful sense of Dykes playbook by that point in time.

In other news, we unfortunately just got edged by UCLA for a JUCO punter who likely would have been eligible to play this year. Mengel (said punter), quickly started to make headlines as he surprisingly became one of the most sought after recruits in the PAC 12 this summer.

Some visits...

  • Russell Ude, DE, Atlanta (Ga).

A Georgia recruit, Ude visited back in July. He is highly sought after, especially amongst PAC 12 schools.

Side note, fellow Georgia recruit Jonathan Ledbetter also visited with Ude. Seems great I know, but don't get your hopes up just yet. Ledbetter is currently an Alabama commit. Not sure what sort of voodoo Dykes would have to pull to get Ledbetter to renege on his promise to Nick Saban (the same kind that worked on Keenan Allen, hopefully).

  • Jack Dreyer, OT, San Mateo (Ca.)

A behemoth of a player, Dreyer would be an instant boon to any offensive line. He's got a great GPA, but has visited Stanford twice (blast!). Would be great if we could get him though.

  • Frank Ginda, ILB, Los Banos (Ca.)

Standing at 6'2, Khari is a promising strong safety type player who could potentially replace Sebastian after this next year.

New Offers

  • Mizzou tight end commit Daniel Imatorbhebhe, Suwanee (Ga.)

We also offered his Class of 2016 brother...

For you curious folk, ever wondered what the official Cal offer looks like? I'll give you a hint, it's a bit cooler than the regular acceptance letter. This is courtesy of Freddie Simmons, a WR recruit.

More on Simmons, the athlete who posted the offer pictures.
