A Golden Goal give the Golden Bears some sweet revenge over the Santa Clara Broncos on Sunday afternoon. In the 93rd minute, senior Lorin Hom scored her 2nd goal of the season (she also scored the very first goal of the Cal season on Friday) on a penalty kick to give No.23 Cal a 2-1 victory over the higher ranked (No.10 in one poll) Santa Clara on Santa Clara's own field.
Here is the team after the Golden Goal:
Santa Clara ended the Bears' season on the very same field last year by the same score. With the win, the Golden Bears remain perfect (2-0) on the very young season.
The Women's Soccer team is a fun team to follow on Social Media as they are a very spirited bunch. Here was their huddle from before the match:
At some time this week, I'll post about my experience at the Friday game (actually if you look at the spots right by the goal, you might be able to spot me as the one that is neither a Cal athlete (men's water polo, men's soccer, and women's gymnastics were on hand to cheer on the Cal Family) nor the few little kids there). It was definitely quite a fun environment that Cal Athletics are trying to create at the soccer matches.
Recaps of the goals (from CalBears.com)
GOLDEN BEAR GOALS
64’ – Samantha Witteman (assisted by Annia Mejia) – cross from the baseline into the left side of the goal
Witteman says: We got a corner, and Grace had a great flick over to Ify (Onumonu), who dropped the ball at Annia near the keeper. Annia did a Cruyff behind her toward me. I had an open net because the goalie had stepped on Annia and I knocked it in.
93’ – Lorin Hom – penalty kick
Hom says: I thought it was really important to put the game away right there. Ify was the one who made the run to get us there. I felt like we dominated most of the game and we were the better team for most of the game, so I didn’t feel too pressured.
SANTA CLARA’S GOAL
38' - Kat Mcauliffe (assisted by Jenna Roering) - Roering took it down the right side and crossed it left toward Mcauliffe

After opening the season with a 3-1 home win over USF Dons, the Bears now hit the road to take on the Santa Clara Broncos. Last year, the Bears won the regular season match against the Broncos but fell in the NCAA tournament. Can the Bears avenge for that 2-1 loss?
Santa Clara opened their season also on Friday with a 2-0 win over UC Irvine. They are expected to be quite strong this year yet again, earning a No.10 preseason ranking in the polls.

On CalBears.com, the new game recap now offers plenty of more details on the goals scored, here are their description of the goals from Friday. So this was what happened on Friday.
GOLDEN BEAR GOALS
47’ – Lorin Hom (assisted by Arielle Ship and Celeste Boureille) – low shot to the right corner
Hom says: "I saw Cel B. posted up and the left side was open, so I rolled underneath and shot into the far corner."
64’ – Arielle Ship (unassisted) – straight shot from the center outside the box
Ship says: "I got the ball and I faced up. I saw the defenders in hindsight. I drew the first defender, did a scissors and faked left and pushed the ball right. No one was really stepping to me, so I knew I had the shot and went for it."
79’ – Ifeoma Onumonu (assisted by Taylor Comeau and Celeste Boureille) – pass from the middle out wide and tapped into an empty net
Onumonu says: The goal was a good assist by Cel. B with the first pass from Taylor, then to Cel B. and then to me. It was simple with the things that we work on in practice – passing, small passes and an easy touch in.
SAN FRANCISCO’S GOAL
58’ – Amanda Whittle (unassisted) – from the top of the box to the lower left
