Chester, PA - Bears have done it again. The California Golden Bears to be precise, are the Collegiate Rugby Championships winner for a second straight year. Overcoming a very tough and much more local Kutztown University Golden Bears by a score of 24-21, Cal is able to claim the 2nd Rugby 7s national title in school history and the 28th overall rugby national championships. The game was slightly less close than the final score as Kutztown got a final try and conversion as the last play of the game, but it was still nerve-wrecking until the end.
5th year senior and an unprecedented 3rd time captain Seamus Kelly is able to close out his stellar college career with another national title. Head coach Jack Clark also gets yet another accolade before his induction into the USA Rugby Hall of Fame in Houston in the very near future this Saturday before the US-Scotland match in Rugby 15s. This is Coach Clark's 24th overall national championships for the Golden Bears.
Check back on Wednesday for a closer look at my two days at the CRC. Enjoy the 2nd team national title of the 2013-14 school year for Cal Athletics (the other one came from Cal men's swimming).
GO BEARS!
