California Men's Crew in 2014 IRA National Championship

Bears may be a slight underdog to the Washington Huskies heading to the IRA National Championships this weekend, but the Bears were able to edge UW in Saturday's semifinal. Who will prevail in today's Grand Final for the national title?

2014 IRA National Championship

Where: Lake Mercer in West Windsor, New Jersey

When: Grand Finals are this morning (can't find a specific race schedule)

No.2 California Golden Bears and No.1 Washington Huskies have met a few times already. Huskies won the annual meet between the two and was able to beat the Bears in the Pac-12 championships (although the Bears did take a lead very briefly late). Bears were able to finally turn the table by beating the Huskies in the semifinal yesterday (3:40:00 mark in the video below). Nevertheless, both teams (and others) will row for the 2014 IRA National Championship today at around 9 AM PT.

Besides the Varsity 8 boat that will determine the "National Champions" in Men's Crew, there are also other Cal boats competing in Grand Finals this morning. In fact, every Cal boats are in the Grand Finals.

Freshman 8+

The Bears’ freshman eight earned a spot in Sunday’s Grand Final with their performance on Friday.

Varsity 8+

Second Varsity 8+

Top Three: 1. California (5:56.044), 2. Princeton (5:58.087), 3. Brown (5:58.331)

Third Varsity 8+

Top Three: 1. California (5:57.023), 2. Brown (6:01.485), 3. Princeton (6:02.931).

Varsity 4+

Top Three: 1. California (6:39.598), 2. Brown (6:42.512), 3. Georgetown (6:43.483).

In addition to qualifying boats for the Grand Final, it is also clear that the Bears have had the top semifinal times. Are the Golden Bears just peaking at the right time or are they peaking a day too early? We will find out this morning whether the Bears can get their 17th Men's Crew national title (2nd only to Cal Rugby within Cal Athletics) and only the first one since 2010.
