Who's ready for prime time? 2014 NFL Draft, first round open thread

New, comments

The NFL Draft, a once obscure event called the annual "player selection meeting," has evolved into a televised and hyped event. Tonight, we will see the first round completed. And there is no shortage of intrigue in this year's first round.

Will South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney be the first player selected in this year's NFL Draft?

Finally, after months of waiting through the NFL scouting combine, the endless "pro days" around the country, and all the hype, the NFL Draft is finally here.  For the first time, the draft is being held in May, as the league decided to push the event back a couple of weeks.  Clearly, the event needed more hype.

Tonight's prime time showcase is simply day one of the draft.  Tonight, the teams will complete the first round. The rest of the draft will be completed tomorrow and Saturday. (In this writer's opinion, Saturday's viewership separates the true draftniks from the mere amateurs!)

Here is the order for the first round:

1. Houston Texans
2. St. Louis Rams (from Washington Redskins)
3. Jacksonville Jaguars
4. Cleveland Browns
5. Oakland Raiders
6. Atlanta Falcons
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
8. Minnesota Vikings
9. Buffalo Bills
10. Detroit Lions
11. Tennessee Titans
12. New York Giants
13. St. Louis Rams
14. Chicago Bears
15. Pittsburgh Steelers
16. Dallas Cowboys
17. Baltimore Ravens
18. New York Jets
19. Miami Dolphins
20. Arizona Cardinals
21. Green Bay Packers
22. Philadelphia Eagles
23. Kansas City Chiefs
24. Cincinnati Bengals
25. San Diego Chargers
26. Cleveland Browns (from Indianapolis Colts)
27. New Orleans Saints
28. Carolina Panthers
29. New England Patriots
30. San Francisco 49ers
31. Denver Broncos
32. Seattle Seahawks

There is still plenty of uncertainty at the top of the draft.  Will the Houston Texans select South Carolina defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney with the first overall selection?  Or will the quarterback-needy Texans go with Texan Johnny Manziel?  Or will the Texans trade down?  We shall see.

No Cal players are expected to go in the first round.  I just told you something you already knew. In light of that fact, let's take a trip down memory lane.

This is your open thread for the first round.  Comment as you watch on ESPN and/or NFL Network.
