Cal Men's Basketball Lands a Point Guard

Hoping that good things come in small packages, Coach Martin has secured a commitment from Brandon Chauca.

Listed at 5'9, 165 lbs, Chauca averaged 23 points, seven assists and three rebounds last season for the 22 Feet Academy in Greenville, South Carolina.

He's been described as an under-the-radar 2* recruit who might have been overlooked because he missed half of his senior year due to illness.

Will he follow in Cal legend Jerome Randle's giant footsteps?  90% from the line, 49% from deep, and 64% from the field suggest that this young man has a great shooting touch.

Scout writers from South Carolina described him as:

"The 5'9 165 pound lead guard was excellent in guiding his team, knocking down deep 3-pointers, and getting to the hole almost at will. We'd describe him as a "slick" point guard who knows how to play the game the right way with some flash when necessary. All in all he gets the job done in a highly productive fashion in all major areas of the game for a point guard."

Although he was courted by Missouri and Washington State, Chauca decided to join 7' center Kingsley Okoroh as part of Cuonzo Martin's inaugural class.  Clearly, he has a high on and off the court IQ.

With Tyrone Wallace and Sam Singer expected to seize the lion's share of minutes at point, Chauca won't be expected to perform more than spot duty next year.  Even so, he provides needed depth and fills a slot made vacant by Ahmaad Rorie's de-committment.

Welcome to Cal, Brandon!
