Cal football recruiting: Tyron Johnson, Jalen Thompson, Leo Lewis among South offers

The Golden Bears have expanded deep into the South this year in handing out offers. Will any of them bear fruit?

Charlotte (N.C.) Christian center Brian Chaffin received one of the many Cal offer. Chaffin currently holds major offers from Virginia Tech, Duke, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Northwestern and Wake Forest.

The first offer by any FBS school to Nashville (Tn.) Pearl-Cohn running back Keshawn Vaughn is from the Golden Bears. It remains to be seen how good Vaughn is (he's mostly flown beneath most of the radars and is generally unranked) and whether he'd be interested enough in a cross-country move to a new home in Berkeley.

Atlanta (Ga.) Marist offensive tackle Sage Hardin recently received a Cal offer too. Hardin currently has a sheet of ACC schools on his radar, as he holds offers from Boston College, Georgia Tech, N.C. State and Virginia.

Another offer went to Lebanon (Tn.) Friendship Christian offensive lineman Andrew Wood. Wood already has offers from programs like Duke, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State.

Cal has offered yet another quarterback in Mobile (Al.) Murphy dual-threat signal-caller Trey Turner. Turner's other offers include South Alabama, Southern Miss and UAB. I would be surprised if Turner is being recruited as a quarterback, with the Bears focusing their attention on the solid number of great California QBs in this class.

Keeping up with the Southeast tune, Creekside (Ga.) wide receiver Jayson Stanley also received a Cal offer (just a few days after offers from Auburn and Kentucky). He's a burner.

Jacksonville (Fl.) Bishop Kenny offensive tackle Tyler Jordan also got a Cal offer. Jordan has already committed to Florida.

Green Cove Springs (Fl.) Clay offensive tackle Michael Howard also picked up an offer from the Bears. Cal, Cincinnati, Colorado, Minnesota, North Carolina, Rutgers, West Virginia are among the schools that have offered early.

Many (La.) offensive guard Garrett Thomas picked up an offer from Cal, as well as Oklahoma State. Auburn, Michigan, Arkansas, Miami, and Vanderbilt. Thomas is probably waiting on LSU to hand out an offer.

One of the top prospects in the country is Warron Easton (La.) wide receiver Tyron Johnson, and the Bears are offering their due diligence here.

Johnson has offers from LSU, Texas A&M, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Oklahoma, UCLA and company.

Mobile (Al.) St. Paul's Episcopal cornerback Jalen Thompson recently picked up a Cal offer. Thompson has offers from a few big time programs, including Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Vanderbilt.

Additionally, one of the top linebackers received a Cal offer in Brookhaven (Ms.) linebacker Leo Lewis. Lewis has offers from Oregon State, UCLA, Clemson, Notre Dame and ten SEC schools. I'd consider our chances remote.

Another offer was sent out to Bay Saint Louis (Miss.) St. Stanislaus offensive lineman Ryan Gibson. Gibson definitely fits the academic profile this staff would like to see.

Gibson has been offered by Air Force, Cincinnati, and a few other mid-major programs.

Columbia (Tn.) Central tight end Jackson Harris just picked up a Cal offer. Harris is already at over two dozen offers from mostly SEC and ACC schools.
