Dual gamethreads for Cal vs. Stanford in baseball and women's water polo (MPSF semifinal)

These are key battles for the Cal Baseball and Cal Women's Water Polo squads looking to make the NCAA Tournament in their respective sports. Standing in the way are those 'Furds from down the Bay.

We have two Cal-Furd games going on right now, both with online streams and postseason implications (read more about the postseason outlooks here). Cal Baseball (16-20, 5-10) needs to win 11 of the final 17 games to qualify for the postseason. They will start a 3 game series against 'Furd today.

For the 4th ranked Cal Women's Water Polo (18-7), they are in the MPSF Tournament semifinal today against the top ranked 'Furd. With only two at large bids available, the Bears need to win the MPSF Tournament to ensure of a chance to make the tournament, a win tomorrow in the 3rd place game (should the Bears fall today) is probably not enough.

Cal Baseball (16-20, 5-10 in Pac-12) at Stanfurd (15-17, 6-9 in Pac-12)

Cal Baseball took the rubber game against the Pac-12 leading Washington last week, but suffered a midweek loss at Fresno State. They will need to win every remaining series to possibly get above 0.500 and get a spot in the postseason (Bears' current RPI in the 60s would also rise by a bit should they win that many games). Freshman Daulton Jefferies is expected to be the starter for the Bears. Bears and Furd has met once earlier this year in Berkeley and that was a forgettable 11-1 Furd win.

A trio of freshmen have found their way to the everyday lineup for the Bears. Aaron Knapp (brother of former All-American Andrew) is now hitting leadoff (over Pearson who has struggled at the plate). Lucas Erceg has taken over the 3rd base and Robbie Tenerowicz has taken over 2nd base.

Bears have had 8 wins so far over ranked teams but do not have the consistency to beat the unranked teams.

Can the infusion of the youngster lead the team to the necessary hot finish to turn this season into a return to the postseason?

No.4 Cal Women's Water Polo (18-7) at No.1 Stanfurd

A rematch of the Big Splash from last weekend is upon us. Bears suffered a 9-6 setback against 'Furd after getting an early 3-1 lead. This game means a whole lot more to the Bears than to Furd, will that make the difference?

Bears needed OT to beat San Jose State 8-7. Senior Ashley Young had a hat trick with freshmen Antal, Tarrago, and Illes scoring the other goals. Freshman goalie Madeline Trabucco had 4 saves.

If nothing else, this game would be further great experiences for the Cal youngsters.
