Cal basketball coaching staff: Cuonzo Martin brings Tracy Webster, Jon Harris as assistants

Martin is bringing his guys!

As expected, new California Golden Bears head coach Cuonzo Martin is bringing along two of his assistants from Tennessee. Former associate head coach Tracy Webster is joining Martin at Cal likely in a similar capacity at Cal, and Jon Harris will also join the staff as an assistant. Jeff Faraudo has the initial story.

Webster, 43, was Martin's associate head coach at Tennessee and was a fellow assistant at Purdue, Martin's alma mater. A former Big Ten rival as a player at Wisconsin, Webster scored 1,264 career points, dished a school-record 501 assists and was a first-team all-Big Ten selection as a senior in 1994.

He also has coaching experience at Nebraska, Kentucky and DePaul.

Jon Harris, 33, spent the past three seasons with Martin after Tennessee and three previous years with him at Missouri State. A two-time team captain during his playing days at Marquette, Harris worked with Tennessee's big men.

With Webster and Harris both in, Faraudo speculates that none of the current coaching staff will be back. Travis DeCuire will likely start looking for a head coaching position elsewhere, and Harris figures to take Gregg Gottlieb’s role on the bench as the second primary coach. There is close to a zero percent chance John Montgomery stays.  Marco Harris will likely be the new director of basketball operations, replacing Theo Robertson.

This will raise some questions about where Cal will stand with its current recruits. At the moment, Ahmad Rorie seems satisfied with the new coach, but has yet to firm up his commitment with the Bears. Idrissa Diallo is an even bigger question mark, particularly with Gottlieb likely finding a new home. Jakob Poeltl has also committed to Utah and there are questions about Kingsley Okoroh’s academic status that have yet to be resolved.
