Jorge Gutierrez signs with the Brooklyn Nets

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

After a day when Cal basketball played with all the emotion of a Vulcan cadet review, I needed some pick-me-up news, and lo and behold it dropped into my lap! JORGE!

Jorge Gutierrez, who went undrafted by the NBA after winning 2012 Pac-12 Player of the Year honors as a senior at Cal, has signed a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets.

NetsDaily has full coverage of the signing. Gutierrez did play with the Brooklyn Nets in the offseason and was one of the last preseason roster cuts. He will be playing under former Golden Bear Jason Kidd, who has turned Brooklyn around and has them on the cusp of a playoff berth.

Now, it is a ten day contract, so who knows how long this experiment lasts. Deron Williams and Shaun Livingston eat up most of the minutes so someone might have to get in foul trouble or take a day off for Gutierrez to see the floor. He might get a chance to take Marqis Teague's minutes though, as Teague has just not been good for Brooklyn this season.

For those wondering what Jorge has been up to, he's been doing quite well for himself in the NBDL. He's continued his evolution upward into floor general, distributing the basketball with ease this season and hitting double-digit assists on numerous occasions.

Gutierrez has started 35 games with the Canton Charge this year, averaging 13.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.2 steals. In his rookie season with the Charge, he made First Team All-Defense (SHOCKER!) and made First Team All-Rookies.

Here's Gutierrez's schedule for the next ten days.

Friday - at Boston Celtics
Sunday - vs. Sacramento Kings
Monday - vs. Toronto Raptors
Wednesday - at Miami Heat
Saturday - at Washington Wizards
Monday (17th) - vs. Phoenix Suns

Congrats Jorge!
