Cal Spring Football Preview: Roster Overview

Football is back!

Our more in-depth preview series ran last week.

Offense Defense Special Teams

Here's a quick primer to the depth chart:

Quarterbacks

Who's out:
Zach Kline(transfer to Oregon State)

Who's due in the fall:
Luke Rubenzer(Fr)
Chase Forrest(Fr)

Who's back:
Jared Goff(So)
Austin Hinder(Sr)
Kyle Boehm(Jr)

Projected Depth Chart:

Goff/Hinder/Rubenzer

Unit Overview:

Goff is clearly the man. Can Austin Hinder develop into a capable backup or will Rubenzer impress enough to avoid a redshirt?

Offensive Line

Who's out:
Freddie Tagaloa(transfer to AZ)

Who's in:
Dominic Granado(Soph via JC)

Who's due in the fall:
Michael Trani(Fr)
Kam Bennett(Fr)

Who's back:

Steven Moore(So)
Chris Adcock(Sr)
Jordan Rigsbee(Jr)
Chris Borrayo(So)
Alex Crosthwaithe(Sr)
Matt Cochran(So)
Aaron Cochran(Fr)
Christian Okafor(So)
Bryan Farley(Jr)
Geoffrey Gibson(Sr)
Vincent Johnson(Fr)
JD Hinnant(Fr)
Erik Bunte(Fr)

Projected Depth Chart:

Moore/Okafor
Borrayo/M. Cochran
Rigsbee/Adcock
Adcock/Crosthwaithe
Granado/A. Cochran

Unit Overview:

Overall, still a young group. Adcock and Rigsbee should be the salty vets, and Borrayo broke out as the top-grading lineman last year. Keep an eye on the competition at tackle.

Running Backs

Who's out:

Brendan Bigelow(declared early for draft)

Who's due in the fall:
Tre Watson(Fr)
Vic Enwere(Fr)
Devante Downs(Fr)

Who's back:

Khalfani Muhammed(So)
Darren Ervin(Jr)
Daniel Lasco(Jr)
Lucus Gingold(Sr)
Jacob Wark(Sr)

Projected Depth Chart:

TB: Lasco or Muhammed/Watson
Bone: Gingold/Downs/Wark

Overview:

You could put Lasco and Muhammed at 1a/1b. Lasco could be an every-down back, but needs to stay healthy. Muhammed's speed and versatility will earn him plenty of snaps.

Wide Receivers

Who's out:
Richard Rodgers(declared early for draft)
Jackson Bouza(graduated)

Who's in:

Trevor Davis(Jr via UH transfer)

Who's due in the fall:
Eric Brown(Fr)

Who's back:

Bryce Treggs(Jr)
Chris Harper(Jr)
Kenny Lawler(So)
Maurice Harris(Jr)
Darius Powe(Jr)
Stephen Anderson(Sr)
James Grissom(Sr)
Jack Austin(Fr)
Ray Hudson(Fr)
Bryce McGovern(Sr)
Drake Whitehurst(Sr)
Jacob Wark(Sr)

Projected Depth Chart:

Treggs
Harper
Lawler
Davis

Powe
Harris
Anderson
Grissom

Unit Overview:

It's the deepest and most talented group on the team. Will Goff be able to spread the ball around enough to keep everyone happy? Will Treggs and Harper spent more time inside?

Defensive Line

Who's out:
Deandre Coleman(graduated)
Viliami Moala(declared early for draft)

Who's in:

Trevor Kelly(Jr via JC)
David Davis(Jr via JC)
Jonathan Johnson(Jr via JC)

Who's due in the fall:

Kennedy Emesibe(Fr)
Noah Westerfield(Fr)

Who's back:

Mustafa Jalil(Jr)
Jacobi Hunter(So)
Sione Sina(Jr)
Marcus Manley(So)
Tony Mekari(Fr)
Austin Clark(Sr)
Brennan Scarlett(Jr)
Todd Barr(Jr)
Puka Lopa(Jr)
Kyle Kragen(Sr)
Raymond Davison(Fr)
Antoine Davis(Jr)

Projected Depth Chart:

DE: Scarlett/Lopa
DT: Kelly/Davis/Jalil
DT: Hunter/Clark
DE: Sina/Barr/Johnson

Overview:

Possibly the biggest question mark on the team. With a new DC, a new position coach, and a trio of JC transfers making their debut, there's a lot of work to be done. One big plus is the return of Brennan Scarlett.

Linebackers

Who's out:
Khairi Fortt(declared early for draft)
Johnny Ragin(transfer to Oregon)
Chad Whitener(transfer to Oklahoma State)
Nick Forbes(medical retirement)

Who's in:

Devante Downs(Fr)

Who's due in the fall:

Sam Atoe(Jr via JC)

Chandler Leniu(Fr)
Aisea Tongilava(Fr)
Hamilton Anoa'i(Fr)
John Porchivina(Fr)

Who's back:

Jalen Jefferson(Jr)
Michael Barton(So)
Nathan Broussard(So)
Jason Gibson(Jr)
Hardy Nickerson(So)
Edward Tandy(Fr)

Projected Depth Chart:

OLB: Jefferson/Gibson/Atoe
MLB: Nickerson/Tandy/Leniu
OLB: Barton/Broussard/Downs

Overview:

Not a lot of bodies left in a unit that really struggled last year. Can Garrett Chachere get this young group up to speed? Keep an eye on Jason Gibson. He was a high school All-American at LB before losing time due to injury and a switch to safety.

Secondary

Who's out:

Kameron Jackson(declared early for draft

Who's in:

Darius White(Jr via JC)

Who's due in the fall:

Quentin Tartabull(Fr)

Who's back:

Avery Sebastian(Sr)
Stefan McClure(Jr)
Cameron Walker(So)
Michael Lowe(Sr)
Demariay Drew(So)
Maximo Espita(So)
Jeffrey Coprich(So)
Cedric Dozier(So)
Joel Willis(Jr)
Darius Allensworth(Fr)
Adrian Lee(Sr)
Trey Cheek(Fr)
Caleb Coleman(Fr)
Ikem Okwudiafor(Sr)
Isaac Lapite(Sr)

Projected Depth Chart:

CB: White/Dozier
SS: Sebastian/Drew
FS: McClure/Lowe
CB: Walker/Willis/Allensworth

Overview:

Sebastian's return instantly upgrades this unit. If healthy, McClure could be that ball-hawking safety we've been missing. The young guys who took their lumps last year should be stronger and ready to prove themselves.

Specialists:

Who's out:
Vincenzo D'Amato(graduation)

Place Kickers:
Noah Beito(So)
Matt Anderson(So)
James Langford(Jr)
Robbie McInerny(So)

Punters:
Cole Leininger(Jr)
Steffan Mos(Sr)

Longsnappers:
John Sheperdson(Sr)
Cary Kriegsman(Sr)

Projected Depth Chart:

PK: Langford/Anderson
P: Leininger/Mos
LS: Sheperdson/Kriegsman
KR: Muhammed
PR: Harper/Treggs

Overview:

Place-kicker is another area of uncertainty. Matt Anderson and James Langford will battle it out for the starting job.
