The California Golden Bears are officially out of the NCAA tournament. Selection Sunday came and went without any mention of Cal. The Bears didn’t even finish as one of the top four teams out.
Cal seemed to be in really good shape after a 5-0 start in conference play, and still looked like they were going to make it if they played okay down their stretch, especially after upsetting Arizona. But they collapsed during the final month of the season, losing 9 of their last 14 games and falling apart. With only four marquee wins over Arizona, Stanfurd, Oregon and Colorado, two bad losses against USC and UC Santa Barbara, and some pretty embarrassing results at the end of the season (six of their final eight losses were double digits, and the Bears lost four of their final seven home games).
Cal will now wait on their fate for tonight’s NIT selection show. They are slated to be one of the highest seeds (although based on the NCAA bracket results we probably are more likely to be a 2 or 3 seed) and figure to be able to host at least one or two games if they get in. We'll have an announcement later today.
Go Bears.
