Match Notes |
Order of finish: Doubles (2,3,1); Singles (1,5,4,3,6) |
The doubles point came down to the tiebreaker and 4 of the 6 singles also went to the tiebreaker "3rd set". Bears still fared pretty well this weekend at the ITA Indoors, and one would think that the youngsters on the team particularly freshmen phenoms in Denise Starr and Maegen Manasse got some valuable experiences.

Bears in the rankings:
In Doubles - No. 48 Denise Starr/Kelly Chui
In Singles -
No. 26 Anett Schutting (Cal)
No. 15 Denise Starr (Cal)
No. 95 Lynn Chi (Cal)
No. 16 Zsofi Susanyi (Cal)
Klara Fabikova (Cal)
No. 31 Maegan Manasse (Cal)
Certainly, the Cal's ranking is different from the order that they are used. I don't think this is necessarily a gamemanship thing by head coach Amanda Augustus. Schutting is more experienced as a senior while Starr is just a freshman. With that said, it is kind of clear to see why the Bears have had plenty of success in singles 4-6 this season with two top-31 players in those positions in junior Susanyi and freshman Manasse.
Dukes in the rankings:
Dukes were 4-2 winner over North Carolina yesterday.
Doubles - no ranking
Singles -
#3 Beatrice Capra (DU)
Chalena Scholl (DU)
#49 Hanna Mar (DU)
#45 Ester Goldfeld (DU)
Rachel Kahan (DU)
Alyssa Smith (DU)
Bears have the edge in both the team and individual rankings, but that can only mean so much.
On the other side of the bracket, it is the 4th seed UCLA (who took out crosstown rival and 5th seed USC 4-0) and Northwestern (who upset the top seed Florida 4-2).

For the second straight day at the ITA Indoors, Bears dropped the doubles point, meaning that they would need to take 4 of the 6 singles matches to advance. The first singles to finish was No.3 which went to Georgia, nevertheless, Bears did win 4 of the 6 first sets in singles. With singles 4, 2, and 5 all finishing in Cal's favor, Bears had to win one of No.1 or No.6 singles. After Anett Schutting got beat by Georgia's Lauren Herring in two sets, it came down to freshman Megan Manasse who was leading by a set but in a tight set 2. With all the pressure of the entire meet in this one match, Manasse was able to prevail and win set 2 to give the Bears a 4-3 victory.
No. 8 Cal (5-0) defeated No. 4 Georgia (4-1) – 4-3
