Cal football roster 2014: Cameron Walker, Stefan McClure, Jason Gibson, more changing positions

Who's playing where?

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

With so many defections and departures from last year's California Golden Bears, it seemed likely that there would be a little roster shuffling. There are a bunch of position changes that appear to be happening before spring practice, almost all of them on defense.

  • Cameron Walker is moving back to his natural cornerback spot. Walker had to play safety last year after Avery Sebastian was injured and Damariay Drew struggled, but he's more of a corner than anything else.
  • Switching with Walker will be Stefan McClure. McClure hasn't played safety in approximately forever, but he struggled at cornerback last season and might be better suited in the open field. McClure will compete with Avery Sebastian and Damariay Drew for a starting spot.
  • Jason Gibson is moving back to outside linebacker. Gibson didn't really make an impact at safety but was placed there for depth reasons. Gibson should be in a more natural spot this season though.
  • Cedric Dozier and Caleb Coleman are sticking at cornerback. Ditto Maximo Espitia at safety.
  • Two junior college recruits were not able to enroll early in Berkeley. JUCO safety Sam Atoe came up a bit short, and defensive tackle David Davis came up a few units short of qualifying for early enrollment. Both Atoe and Davis will be here in the summer. Expect Atoe to slot in as either a linebacker or a nickel back depending on defensive needs.
  • Defensive end Jonathan Johnson and defensive tackle Trevor Kelly are here and will definitely participate in spring practice.
  • With regards to the freshmen, Devante Downs (who also enrolled early) is more likely to play at linebacker. Linebacker John Porchivina could see some time at inside wide receiver.
  • Hawaii transfer Trevor Davis also earned his scholarship and should be eligible to play this spring.
