Inside the Lair - Melanie Klaren

By Herb Benenson

When Melanie Klaren braced herself for the start of the 100-yard backstroke at AT&T Winter Nationals last December, she could be forgiven if she felt she was at practice in Berkeley rather that in the final of a major championship being held in Knoxville, Tenn.

After all, of the eight women in the race, five were Golden Bears, and members of the Cal men's swim team on hand at the meet were shouting "Cal Bear Backstroke" over and over from the pool deck.

One night later, the scene repeated itself. Five Cal swimmers had reached the final of the 200 back and the chant began again. In both races, the Bears claimed five of the first six positions.

"That was the first moment that I really realized what a special thing we have here," Klaren said.

Football

Eleven Golden Bears were named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team, led by senior center Chris Adcock, who has a 3.54 GPA in Business Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Bears in the Pros

C.J. Anderson

CBS Sports - If you've missed the last couple of Denver Broncos games - or if you don't play fantasy football - you might not know a whole lot about C.J. Anderson.

Well, class is now in session.

Anderson rushed 27 times for 167 yards in a 39-36 win over Miami on Nov. 23, and he rushed 32 times for 168 yards in a 29-16 win over Kansas City on Sunday. That's 59 carries for 335 yards - 5.7 yards per carry - and two touchdowns (one rush, one receiving).

"Things have been (going) well," Anderson said on The Doug Gottlieb Show. "I just feel like I haven't gotten too big or taken anything overboard. I've just stayed in my lane and just continued to keep preparing the way I was preparing when I wasn't playing or when I was barely getting any carries. I'm just trying to keep everything on the same routine, and it's just been working out for me."

But how? Anderson, 23, had just 39 carries on the season entering the Miami game.

"You just keep grinding every day," he said. "Nothing came easy for me. I was undrafted, so I just looked at it as an opportunity. I was blessed just to be in the locker room every day, and I just knew when the opportunity came, I was ready and I was going to make the best of it. I just try to keep grinding every day. That's all it's about."

Keenan Allen

BALTIMORE - Keenan Allen looked like a rookie out there on Sunday.

Finally.

That's probably the best compliment Allen could be given, considering this is what we've been waiting for through this, his second season's first 11 games.

Against a Baltimore Ravens defense that played him like few have this season, in single coverage most of the day, Allen made a career-high 11 catches for 121 yards and his first multiple-touchdown game of the season.

Aaron Rodgers

ESPN - GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Aaron Rodgers isn't ready to call this the best Green Bay Packers team he has been a part of, even though Sunday's victory over the New England Patriots has put them on the fast track as Super Bowl favorites.

"Hopefully we'll look back and say this was our best team to date," Rodgers said Tuesday on his ESPN Milwaukee radio show. "But that will only be the case if we can take it all the way."

Green Bay's 9-3 record is tied for the best in the NFL with the Patriots, Broncos, Cardinals and Eagles. The Packers are undefeated (6-0) at Lambeau Field, where they next play the Falcons on ESPN's "Monday Night Football."
