GAMEDAY! Cal vs. UCLA pregame thread

New, 12 comments

The UCLA Bruins come into Berkeley riding a two game losing streak. Cal is trying to get back on track after a lackluster loss a week ago.

Since the late 1990s, the Cal-UCLA football series has been pretty easy to figure out.  With just one exception (a 45-26 Cal win in Pasadena in 2009), the home team always wins.  With today's game taking place at Kabam Field at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, Cal fans hope the pattern holds sway.  UCLA has not won in Berkeley since 1998 and the Bears would like nothing better than to add another year to the Bruins' Strawberry Canyon drought.

Both teams have something to prove coming into this one.  After starting the season 4-0, UCLA (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) has lost two straight (to Utah and Oregon) and are in fifth place in the Pac-12 South.  Meanwhile, after two scintillating wins against Colorado and Washington State, Cal (4-2, 2-2 Pac-12) dropped a 31-7 stinker at home to Washington last week.  The Bears are in fourth place in the Pac-12 North.

We would be remiss if we did not mention that today's game is the annual Joe Roth Memorial Game.  Any Cal fan worth his or her salt knows that Joe Roth's number 12 is the only number to be retired in the program's history.  Give this story a read to learn more about Joe Roth's remarkable story and the documentary film about his life.

This is your pregame thread.  Chatter about the game here. Watch for the first quarter thread as kickoff time draws near.
