BBVA Compass Bowl and FCS Championship Open Thread

Playoffs?!? Are you kidding me? Playoffs?!? The FCS has them and today is the championship game. And there's also a bowl game.

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sport

Just two more days until the BCS crowns its national champion in Pasadena. Until then, we have more bowl games and another national championship to play. Here is the schedule for today:

Saturday, January 4th (Pacific Time)
BBVA Compass Bowl: Houston vs. Vanderbilt 10:00 a.m. ESPN (HD) / WatchESPN
DI-AA Championship: North Dakota State vs. Towson 11:00 a.m. ESPN2 (HD) / WatchESPN

In the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Vanderbilt (8-4) from the SEC takes on Houston (8-4) from the American Athletic Conference. The AAC may have earned some measure of respect after its champion, Central Florida, defeated Big 12 champion Baylor in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day. The conference's profile might rise even higher with a Houston win against an SEC opponent. Vanderbilt may not be a traditional SEC powerhouse, but coach James Franklin has brought the Commodores to more than respectability. This season, Vanderbilt had wins over Georgia and Florida on its resume on the way to a .500 conference record and 4th place finish in the SEC East.

Not interested in the BBVA Compass Bowl? How about a national championship game? In Frisco, Texas, the North Dakota State Bison (14-0) will play the Towson Tigers (13-2) for the NCAA-FCS championship. North Dakota State, which has a win over Kansas State this season, will be gunning for its third straight FCS championship.

Playoffs?!? What a novel concept.
