Series History: UCLA leads 72-3
This weekend, it is Cal vs. UCLA in two different Olympic Sports. Tonight, Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Los Angeles will have the live coverage of the women's gymnastics meet. On Sunday at 4 pm PT (counter programming for the Super Bowl), it is the tape delayed meet (from Saturday at noon) of No.1 Cal women's swimming against UCLA.
Last week, the Bears was on the brink of beating ASU on the road before a pair of falls in the last event (balanced beam) cost the squad a victory. Nevertheless, the young Bears team was close to posting another team score of 196 (only 195.35 last week, which was still the highest road score since 2007). In their only other home meet of the season, the Bears posted a team score of 196.275 (to narrowly loses to No.4 Utah).
Freshman Charlie Owens had the best all-around score last week. Sophomore Serena Leong, freshman Jessica Howe, and senior Alicia Asturias also claimed event titles.
While UCLA only posted a score of 195.875 last week against Utah, they are ranked in top 10 in three events (vaults, bars, and floor) and 15th on beam. A win over UCLA would be huge (and as the all-time record listed above show, a quite rare event).
