Cal Volleyball are playing very well to open the season. In the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational, hosted by Cal, the Bears have easily downed Cal Poly and Santa Clara. Interestingly, Santa Clara was considered the toughest opponent (see quote by Coach Feller below) even though they are not ranked (unlike Creighton who the Bears beat in straight sets at their home). From the CalBears.com recap.
The Broncos (4-4) were one of the tougher opponents Cal has played so far. Santa Clara has taken sets from nationally ranked teams such as Hawaii and UCLA this season, and dominated Kansas State on Thursday during the first night of the tournament. Santa Clara stayed close during each of the first two sets Friday night before Cal rolled in the third.
"That’s the best team that we’ve played," Feller said. "They were so prepared for us and they have aggressive players and a good system. I was really pleased with the consistency of the team. We never panicked when they went on a run. We have to feel good about it because Santa Clara is a good team."
Can the Bears keep the good play going with two more matches (today and next week at UC Davis) until the start of the tough Pac-12 play (Bears host Furd to start conference play)?
The school record for consecutive set win to open the season is 30, set by the 2011 squad. The Bears can make it 24 straight this afternoon.
