Goodbye, Kloff. We hardly knew ye.

Despite saying he did not anticipate the quarterback situation resolving itself by the weekend, apparently Sonny Dykes has seen enough to make his decision.

And the winner is...

Update: it's official. Press release from Cal below.

BERKELEY – True freshman Jared Goff has been named the starting quarterback at Cal, head coach Sonny Dykes announced Friday. Goff has been in a competition for the starting job along with redshirt freshman Zach Kline and junior Austin Hinder since spring ball began last February.

"We have had a fiercely-contested competition for our starting quarterback position," Dykes said. "It’s important to name a starter and give them the reps they need to be prepared to play. We feel that right now Jared Goff gives us the best chance to be successful as a team, but we are very fortunate to have three outstanding quarterbacks we feel we can be successful with."

"I’m honored to get the chance to start for Cal and am looking forward to going out and helping the team win," Goff said. "I’m super excited and ready to get rolling. My competitors are great quarterbacks as well. It was a tremendous competition that has helped all us become better quarterbacks."

Throughout camp, Goff has been steady, consistent, and accurate - never the worst quarterback, never flashy, but never really making mistakes, either, and it would be no surprise if those qualities are what what won him the job. Congratulations to the true freshman!

We'll be checking in with Sonny Dykes later today for his thoughts.
