The California Golden Bears have gone into the state of Washington and landed the commitment of a great player. Isn't that fun?
Lynwood (Wa.) Mountlake Terrace athlete Devante Downs is ready to be a California Golden Bear, committing on Twitter earlier today. Downs has been recruited nationally as either a running back or a linebacker, and it looks like Cal is the place he wants to shine in college.
Just committed to play and get my education at Cal , blessed for the opportunity and can't wait to be there #BearRaid14

Here are the rankings. Downs is a consensus four-star recruit.
- Rivals: 210th national recruit, 2nd best recruit in Washington, 23rd best running back
- 247: 84th nationally, 6th best outside linebacker, 2nd best Washington recruit
- Scout: Number one fullback (huh?)
Downs had offers from seven other Pac-12 schools, including Stanfurd and Washington. Here are his video highlights.
Downs becomes the third potential running back from this class, although it's unclear where Downs will play in college. Downs has the potential to play on either side of the football field, but with Cal already having two running backs in Vic Enwere and Tre Watson and recruiting another, it's unclear where Downs's future lies at the next level (and let's not forget the fact that we have a position called the Bone now...)
With Joe Mixon placing Cal among his favorites, recruiting is looking as promising as its ever been with the new coaching staff in place.
Downs's high school career is over due to an ACL injury, but he will probably be ready by the time he rolls into Cal. Downs is graduating in the winter and will be enrolling in Cal for the spring semester and should participate in spring camp.
I am graduating at the end of the year and then signing my Letter of Intent and enrolling at Cal in January. This will let me get to know the systems, the team, and the school really well and get adjusted to college academics and life. I am really excited for that.
What made Downs choose Cal?
I always wanted to be a student at Cal. The programs they have in Chemistry are amazing- top notch. And I want to be a Pharmacist and this is the place to be for that.
