Cal football: Chris McCain reportedly suspended indefinitely

The Cal defensive line takes another hit.

Ezra Shaw

According to multiple sources within the Cal football program, Chris McCain is currently not with the team and has been suspended indefinitely, reportedly due to academic issues. This suspension is indefinite. McCain becomes the second player in two weeks that the Bears have lost on the defensive side of the ball, with tackle Keni Kaufusi having left the team last week.

The potential loss of McCain appears to be a huge blow - the 6'6" junior has been an emotional leader of the Cal defense. Last year, he and Kendrick Payne led the Bears in sacks, with 3.5 each for the season. Though he missed all of spring ball recovering from a shoulder injury, he was projected to be a starter under Andy Buh's 4-3 system, and seemed poised for a breakout year at defensive end.

How do you think the reported loss of McCain will affect the defense? Who do you think will take over in his place? Sound off below.
