Keni Kaufusi has left the Cal football program, according to a Cal Athletics media representative.
Kaufusi had a quiet career with the Bears, registering 10 tackles (never more than two in one game) and 3.5 tackles for loss in 2012. He was mostly playing in spot duty, as he could never find the best place for him along a 3-4 defensive line (and it didn't help that the line was pretty deep, with Kendrick Payne, Aaron Tipoti, Deandre Coleman and Mustafa Jalil all lining up in front of him). It was likely he'd have seen more action in the 4-3, but that opportunity looks like it won't materialize.
Looking at the post-spring depth chart, this leaves the Bears pretty thin on the interior. Jalil and Coleman weren't relinquishing their starting spots anytime soon, but the depth behind them isn't … deep. Viliami Moala figures to see plenty of time as the first super-sub, but after that things are pretty unclear. Does Gabe King finally get his shot? Will we see Harrison Wilfley and Antione Davis contribute?
Who do the Bears go to on the depth chart to keep Cal with four healthy and productive defensive tackles?
