After surviving Regional play on Saturday, the Bears now look to make it to the Super-Regional round the hardway, by beating host Michigan twice today.
Yesterday, some walks allowed by Jolene Henderson and those always frustrating fielding errors allowed the Wolverines to take the lead 3-0 in the third inning. Cal coach Diane Ninemire opted to pull Jo to both save her for the elimination game and to not give the Wolverines too many looks at the Cal senior ace. Nisa Ontiveros pitched okay in relief, allowing only two solo homers to Michigan's Lauren Sweet.
Bears did manage to get on base a few times but was unable to break through with a run against Sara Driesenga to lose 5-0 and be relegated to the loser's bracket.

In the elimination game, the Bears took on the Valparaiso Crusaders. Jolene Henderson tossed her 4th no-hitter of her career with 7 strikeouts. The only blemish came via another Cal error (ugh!).
Bears took the lead in the top of the first inning. Breana Kostreba coaxed a walk to squeeze in the first run. Victoria Jones followed with a two RBI single.

Against Michigan again today, the Bears need to solve the pitching of Driesenga. Given how the Bears were able to get on base yesterday, maybe that is not an impossible order. Michigan do have another quality arm in lefty Haylie Wagner.
The key for the Bears today however is simply: DO NOT COMMIT ANY DEFENSIVE ERRORS! The Bears are a good enough squad to beat host Michigan twice, but really cannot afford to have more self-inflicted mistakes.
Hopefully, the Cal seniors in Jolene Henderson and Lindsey Ziegenhirt will lead the team to extend their Cal career. Win two and advance to the Super Regional, lose one and go home.
GO BEARS!
