Cal Baseball at No. 21/25 UC Irvine Series Preview and Game 1 Open Thread

Cal Baseball (3-1), receiving a few votes to be around No. 28 or 29 if the ranking goes that far, visit UC Irvine for 4 games starting tonight. Radio calls of play by play are available for this series.

The Bears continue their tough stretch of road games with a trip to UC Irvine for 4 games this weekend. After a 5-0 setback (inability to get clutch hit and too many walks allowed) to Furd on Wednesday, the Bears (3-1) will attempt again to get their first road game of the season.

UC Irvine are coming off a 3 game home sweep of Baylor (who Cal will face next to open up a tournament in Houston next weekend, hosted by Rice). Friday night's starter Andrew Thurman is named a preseason first team All-American. The Bears will counter with Senior lefty Justin Jones, who allowed 4 runs in 3.1 innings against Michigan in Cal's first game of the season.

It's nice to see Devon Rodriguez, the hero of that epic comeback in the magical season two years ago, back in the middle of the lineup this year. It is also interesting that Derek Campbell, who played plenty of middle infield, being the primary CF for the season.
