Bowl season rolls on with three more games today. Here is the schedule:
Military Bowl: Marshall vs. Maryland | 11:30 a.m. | ESPN (HD) / WatchESPN |
Texas Bowl: Minnesota vs. Syracuse | 3:00 p.m. | ESPN (HD) / WatchESPN |
Fight Hunger Bowl: BYU vs. Washington | 6:30 p.m. | ESPN (HD) / WatchESPN |
In the first game of the day, the Thundering Herd of Marshall (9-4) will try for a 10-win season against the Maryland Terrapins (7-5) in the Military Bowl. This one is being played on Navy's home field in Annapolis, MD, so the Terps are playing relatively close to home. Maryland will have its hands full with the Marshall offense, which ranks seventh nationally in scoring (43.0 ppg) and 13th in total offense (502.3 ypg). Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato is the player to watch in this one.
Next up is the Texas Bowl in Houston, featuring the Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-4) and the Syracuse Orange (6-6). The Gophers have had a nice season, getting to eight wins despite having to deal with the health issues of head coach Jerry Kill. A win in the Texas Bowl would give Minnesota its second nine win season in school history. If Minnesota gets the win, it will have to do it against a Syracuse team that had a meh kind of a season. The Orange were blown out in losses to Northwestern (48-27), Clemson (49-14), Georgia Tech (56-0), and Florida State (59-3), but defeated three bowl teams (Tulane, Maryland, and Boston College).
One Cal connection to watch for in this game: Minnesota cornerback Brock Vereen, an All Big Ten selection this season, is the brother of Shane Vereen, whom you may have heard of.
The final game of the day is probably the one you're most likely to watch: our Pac-12 North brother Washington (8-4) versus BYU (8-4) in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The Huskies, as you likely know, broke the elusive seven-win ceiling under coach Steve Sarkisian. But after reaching eight wins at UW, Sarkisian promptly bolted for the head coaching job at USC. Former Huskies quarterback Marques Tuisasosopo will coach UW in the bowl game, with former Boise State coach Chris Petersen waiting in the wings to take over the permanent gig as soon as the bowl game is done. As if losing their head coach wasn't enough of a distraction, the Huskies are also dealing with the news that defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi (remember him?) is the subject of an investigation for recruiting violations.
This is your open thread for today's bowl action. Share your thoughts in the comments as you watch. Enjoy the games.
