Cal Volleyball vs. Washington State on Pac-12 Networks Open Thread: Senior Day

It is Senior Day for Cal Volleyball this morning as the Bears honor their two key seniors in outside hitter Adrienne Gehan (who may still be held out due to a abdominal injury suffered last week in the Oregon roadtrip) and setter Joan Caloiaro. Also, Coach Rich Feller is still gunning for that 600th career win. Will 3rd time be the charm? GO BEARS!

The only pictures with both seniors that I can find came from their banquet last year.

11 a.m. PT - Washington State (17-13, 4-13) at No. 23 Cal (17-9, 10-7)

Cal All-Time Series vs. the Cougars: 39-22
Last meeting: W, 3-1 (10-19-2013)

The Friday night match against No.3 Washington was both inspirational (Bears pushed the Huskies who NEEDED that win to stay in the lead for the Pac-12 title to the limit AND the Bears were without their best player in Adrienne Gehan) and frustrating (team thought that they had won the match before realizing that there was a controversial net violation call...bad/questionable calls are a part of the game). The Bears will get the chance to take out some frustration as well as possibly give more youngsters experiences when they host the Washington State Cougars today to kick off our Sunday Bearathon (Men's Soccer's 2013 NCAA debut and Women's Basketball will follow in today's Cal Athletics action).

Before today's match against Washington State, the Bears will have the Senior Day ceremony in honor of seniors in outside hitter Adrienne Gehan and setter Joan Caloiaro. By the way, tickets for the volleyball match can double for the women's basketball game later that day (additionally, Cal Men's Soccer is hosting the Bradley Braves in their NCAA 2nd Round match at 1:30 pm PT).

Adrienne Gehan, who recently surpassed 1000 kills for her career, is only the 15th Bears to ever reach that mark. The undisputed leader on the team, Gehan played the Oregon match last weekend despite a nagging injury (leading to her being held out for the Washington match and her uncharacteristically poor output against Oregon). She also has been documenting what is going on with the team off the court in the weekly Diggin' with Adrienne Gehan blog on

Joan Caloiaro has been the Cal setter for the past two seasons. The transfer from USF has a famous volleyball cousin in Olympian Kerri Walsh. In addition to running the Cal offense smoothly, Caloiaro has had the knack to get key points off dumps that surprise the opposition. She has a fairly impressive 0.318 hitting percentage for the season (prior to the UW match).

Finally, Coach Rich Feller will go again for his career win 600 (and 301st as a Cal Bear).

More Volleyball News (in case you missed it on Friday):

  • Bears got two big signees for the 2014 season in outside hitter Ashten Smith-Gooden and middle blocker Laura Leap (that's a good volleyball/basketball name). Smith-Gooden is the 5th ranked prospect in the entire country (and the best ranked recruit since Tarah Murray) while Leap is 94th.
  • Cal Volleyball also announced an international trip to Europe next spring where they will visit and play against teams in Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. The team is doing additional fundraising to pay for the trip. You can find more info on that from the link above.
