Earlier this morning, defensive back Shon Akins made a change in his commitment status through his twitter account, announcing that he would no longer be a Golden Bear. He has not yet chosen a new school.
Decommited from Cal
— Shon Akins (@akinss23) January 7, 2013
The 5'9", 165 pound corner from Norcross, Georgia was Cal's first 2013 commitment back in April 2012, and had a very strong season, recording 91 total tackles and 19 passes defensed. His team went 15-0 in 2012 and eventually took home the Georgia 6A state title, but Akins was a clear standout, and was named to the Georgia Sports Writers Association's All-State Team for his efforts.
While news of any decommitment is never hoped for, the Bears should still be fine without the 3 star prospect - they still have three other defensive back recruits in the 2013 class, including 4 star cornerback Darius Allensworth and fellow GeorgianTrey Cheek. Cal is also targeting a few more corners in this class.
What do you make of this news, readers? Would you like to see Cal bring in another DB to replace Akins, or use that slot elsewhere? Sound off below.
