First and foremost, we have a few new Golden Bears. A day or so ago I was certain that Tony Mekari was a firm commit for Arizona. Here's a tweet from yesterday on how he wasn't even going to visit Cal.
Arizona commit Tony Mekari says that he will no longer be taking a visit to Cal
— Jason Scheer (@JasonScheer) January 14, 2013
He's listed as a DT, but could probably play offensive line if really needed. Based on his tape he looks like a very disruptive force. Go Bears!
GM: Tony Mekari flips to #Cal from #Arizona, heard he had a clandestine visit to Berkeley Monday that sealed the deal...
— Cal Rivals (@CalRivals) January 16, 2013
JF: Just spoke w/ Tony Mekari. "Out of respect, I called Arizona first then I called Cal and told 'em I'm a Bear" - full write up to follow
— Cal Rivals (@CalRivals) January 16, 2013
Seems like the deciding factor was Cal academics, which I absolutely love to hear. Mekari is supposedly an owner of a 4.0 plus GPA, and wants to study either pre-med or business. Check out the story in the tweet below.

As most of you know, Dannon Cavil has decommitted and is now committed to Oklahoma. Really not much of a surprise here. The kid loved Oklahoma, even though they basically offered him a few days before classes started. Although this loss hurts our class ranking, in terms of recruiting, we want players who think of Cal as one of their dream schools, not some other school in the midwest. Best of luck to Danon.
GM: Just confirmed, 3-star WR Dannon Cavil has decommitted from #Cal in favor of #Oklahoma.
— Cal Rivals (@CalRivals) January 14, 2013
Recruiting has been a BLESSING and a curse. Im glad its all over.
— Dannon Cavil (@dannoncavil) January 14, 2013
Committed to the University of Oklahoma,.. enroll in the next couple of days. twitter.com/dannoncavil/st…

Johnny Ragin- Wilsonville Oregon OLB, seems to be heavily considering us at this point. It's really between us and BYU, where he is committed as of now.
GM: Talked to Johnny Ragin III tonight, he said he'll sit down w/ his mom and figure everything out after he visits BYU next week. #Cal #BYU
— Cal Rivals (@CalRivals) January 15, 2013
Sounds like he really enjoyed his time in Berkeley while on his official.
Great trip to Berkeley! Always good to be back home though. Askin' God to guide me in the right direction with this decision!
— Johnny Ragin III (@Glory_IIIERA) January 14, 2013
Ragin would be a very nice pickup because of his versatility. Although he could be plugged in at both OLB positions, he could also be a fullback if needed.
Under the radar St. Mary's Wideout, Caleb Coleman seems to be a solid commit at this point. He recently sat down and talked with the new coaching staff about how he'll fit into the offense next year.

Marcus Manley, DT from Santa Monica City College, is taking an official to Cal on January 25th.
Per @lasportsjournal, SMCC defensive tackle Marcus Manley will be taking an OV to Cal on 1/25. Manley is 6'2/279.
— Marc Tausend (@ManBearCal) January 14, 2013
Just watching a couple plays of this video I can tell that Manley has really nice speed and quickness for a guy that's 6'2, 280. Other than that, I don't know much about him. His high school tape looks very promising, so I'm wondering why he went to SMCC for his freshmen year. Regardless, he may be a steal, and will definitely provide some needed depth on the D line. Word on the street is that we have offered him at this point.
Paramount High School Offensive Tackle Chris Borrayo committed earlier this week and seems very excited to be a Bear. Great to see another addition to our offensive line for next year.
Chris Borrayo has committed to #Cal. Another nice pickup for the Golden Bears.
— Adam Gorney (@adamgorney) January 14, 2013
He also seems to be excited about the academic opportunities that Cal has. Great stuff!
Congrats to the newest Bear, Paramount OL Chris Borrayo: "With Cal's academics and all the program has going for it, they're place for me."

Chris Gonzalez, DL/OT from Salesian High School (Los Angeles) will be visiting Cal next weekend. Gonzalez is a very under the radar recruit. He is a little undersized for the O and D lines at this point at 250, but has solid athleticism. Put a little more weight on his frame and I could see him as a DE or as a number of positions on the O-line. He could even play some linebacker and be a Brennan Scarlett like player.
RT @adamgorney: Los Angeles Salesian DL Chris Gonzalez plans to visit #Cal next weekend

De La Salle LB/TE Austin Hooper has committed to Stanford. It's a real bummer to lose a local commit like this to the Furd, but it happens. He would have been a nice backup to Rodgers and company. I wonder if Stanford will implement him as a TE or DE.
RT @stanfordrivals: Breaking: De la Salle star Austin Hooper has committed to Stanford. Huge get for the Card.
— Marc Tausend (@ManBearCal) January 13, 2013
Speedy WR/CB Devin Ross from Bishop Alemany is very high on Cal. As of now he is a Colorado commit, but claims to have Cal as one of his top two choices despite not even having an offer yet.
Reminds me a little bit of Bryce Treggs. I'd really like to see him at corner though. Hopefully we offer him and steal him from MacIntyre.
Rivals' @manbearcal talks to high 3-star Devin Ross, who has #Cal in his final two even w/o an offer yet ($) shar.es/4xKKW #Colorado

Also, OL Cameron Hunt seemed to really have enjoyed his official to Michigan. This is not necessarily telling that Hunt will decommit, but it definitely isn't a good sign either. Hunt still has officials to Ohio State, Oregon, and then his final official is to Cal, so we'll still have the last say.
Leaving for Michigan tomorrow, can't wait!! #GoBlue

Great night last night!
— Cameron Hunt (@cjhunt78) January 12, 2013
@fitzgerald70 it went well! I love itUp there!
— Cameron Hunt (@cjhunt78) January 14, 2013
Stay firm with that commit Hunt!
Ray Hudson, TE from Foothill High School, met with the new coaching staff for the first time a few days ago. Wonder why it took them so long to meet with him, but he seems excited to still be on board with the Bears for 2013.
Cal coaches coming to visit tonight. Stoked to meet the new staff in person
— Ray Hudson (@rayhudson11) January 13, 2013
Aaron Cochran is still up in the air. As of now it seems like he's down to us, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. He is still set to decide after his official to Cal on January 18th.
Apparently, Cal Rivals reporters called his home to ask how his in-home went. Guess who picked up the phone?
Pretty hilarious: We called Aaron Cochran to ask how his in-home went & brother Matt picked up pretending to be him ($) shar.es/4EcGX

Drake Whitehurst also went on an official this weekend and loved Cal.
Drake Whitehurst... RT @drizzytweet81 Awesome official visit this weekend down at Cal. School starting soon. #gobears instagr.am/p/UdGfQCAyQE/
— Cal Rivals (@CalRivals) January 14, 2013
Apparently, he also has some connections with Johnny Ragin and is pitching him to come to Cal as well.

Dykes took both these guys (Ragin and Whitehurst) as well as Goff and Matt Anderson (SRV kicker) to a Cal basketball game this weekend.
On hand for today's basketball game: Jared Goff, Drake Whitehurst, Matt Anderson, and John Ragin. Dykes also in attendance
— Cal Rivals (@CalRivals) January 12, 2013
We also just offered 2015 Cornerback Marven Tell from Crespi High School.
That's all for this week everyone. Some disappointments, but a few important positives- especially with the additions of Tony Mekari, Chris Borrayo, and the other potential commits on the O/D lines.
