Cal Olympic Sports: Rugby in the Buckeye 7s Invitational Open Thread

Rugby 7s being in the Rio 2016 Games is the main reason why Cal Rugby is playing in the Buckeye 7s Invitation today and tomorrow, but I would have settled for just another opportunity to beat up on Ohio State in a sport.
Rugby 7s being in the Rio 2016 Games is the main reason why Cal Rugby is playing in the Buckeye 7s Invitation today and tomorrow, but I would have settled for just another opportunity to beat up on Ohio State in a sport.

In addition to the football game tomorrow, Cal Rugby has also made the trip East to Columbus, Ohio to participate in the Buckeye 7s Invitationals. With the addition of Rugby 7 in the next Olympics (Rio 2016), Cal Rugby has started to make the transition this year to play more of the Rugby 7s format (explanation after the jump), starting with this and the Pac Rugby 7s Championship in November. Here are the scheduled matches for today (championship finales are scheduled for tomorrow morning at 6 and 6:30 AM PT...prior to the football game).

Score update: Cal Rugby twitter

  • Notre Dame 2:40 p.m PT (may not be webstreamed)
  • Navy 4:30 p.m PT
  • Ohio State at 6 p.m. PT

The Rugby Bears most recently played in the 2012 CRC 7s in Philadelphia back in May where they defeated the Notre Dame Irish, 29-0, and the Navy Midshipmen, 21-10 in route to a Bronze medal. From the Cal Athletics article, Cal has brought 5 of the 7 players from the CRC squad and 3 freshmen with 7s experience to improve upon their all-time 16-6 (.727) record in Rugby 7s. Mercury News' Jeff Faraudo also has a preview of Cal Rugby in this tournament.
